Rachel (biblical figure), in the Old Testament, daughter of Laban, favorite wife of the Hebrew patriarch Jacob, and the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. According to the biblical account (see Genesis 29-35), Jacob served his kinsman Laban seven years for her and then, receiving her sister, Leah, in her stead, was obliged to serve seven years more for Rachel. As Rachel was at first thought to be barren she gave her husband a servant, Bilhah, as concubine, and thus became the putative mother of Dan and Naphtali. Her own son, Joseph, was born later. She died in Canaan after giving birth to Benjamin.
