His paternal grandfather is Green Berry Jones; his maternal grandparents were William Edwards and Martha Sue Higgins. He has six brothers and six sisters, named James Henry, William G., Harvey Newton, Ezra Edward, Joel Arthur, Robert Maurice, Tabitha Anna, Martha Ethel, Theodosia B., Nettie Molinda, Ameda Irene and Lena Bernice. He is the sixth youngest of the thirteen children.-
