Ulfert was born on April 3rd, 1803 in Rorichum, Ostfriesland, Germany.  Ulfert's father was Willem Janssen Willemssen and his mother was Frauoke Janssen Bruns.  His paternal grandparents were Willem Janssen and Trintje Hinders. He had a brother and two sisters, named Hinrich Hindkerk Willems, Wopke and Grietje.  He was the youngest of the four children.
