Grietje was born in 1801 in Rorichum, Ostfriesland, Germany.  Grietje's father was Willem Janssen Willemssen and her mother was Frauoke Janssen Bruns.  Her paternal grandparents were Willem Janssen and Trintje Hinders. She had two brothers and a sister, named Hinrich Hindkerk Willems, Ulfert and Wopke.  She was the second youngest of the four children.
