Bertha was born about 0766 in Aachen, Rhineland, Germany.  Bertha's father was Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and her mother was Hildegard of Vinzgau.  Her paternal grandparents were Pepin III 'the Short' and Lady Bertha Broadfoot; her maternal grandparents were Gerold Childebrand and Emma von Alamans. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Pepin, Lothaire, Louis I, Adelaide, Rotrude, Gisela and Hildegarde.  She was the oldest of the eight children. She had five half-brothers and nine half-sisters, named Duke of Ingelheim, the Monk, Bishop of Metz, Abbot of Saint Quentin, Pepin "The, Theodrade, Hiltrude, Adbelinda, Rothais, Aupais, Dhoude, Abbesse of Farmoutier, Adeltrude and Gertrude.
