Bertha was born about 0766 in Aachen, Rhineland, Germany. Bertha's father was Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and her mother was Hildegard of Vinzgau. Her paternal grandparents were Pepin III 'the Short' and Lady Bertha Broadfoot; her maternal grandparents were Gerold Childebrand and Emma von Alamans.
