Alexander was born on November 3rd, 1739 in Edinburgh,Midlothian,Scotland.  Alexander's father was Mark SPROTT and his mother was Katharine RUSSELL.  His paternal grandparents were William SPROTT and Euphan MOFFAT. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Mark, John, Janet, Eupham and Katharine.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
