Joane was born about 1202 in Of,Pembroke,Pembrokeshire,Wales. Joane's father was William MARSHALL and her mother was Isabel Fitzgilbert De CLARE. Her paternal grandparents were John "the Marshall" FITZGILBERT and Sibilla (Sibyl) De SALISBURY; her maternal grandparents were Richard "Strongbow" Fitzgilbert De CLARE and Eva (Aoife) MCMURROUGH. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Gilbert, William, Richard, Anselm, Walter, Margaret, Maud (Matilda), Eve, Isabel and Sibyl. She was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
