His paternal grandparents were Adalbert I Margrave of Ivrea and Gisela of Princess of Italy; his maternal grandparents were Boso Count of Arles, Margrave of Tuscany and Willa of Tuscany. He had two sisters named Gerberge of Princess of Italy and Susanna (Rosella) of Princess of Italy. He was the oldest of the three children.¹
