His paternal grandparents were Pippin III 'the Short' Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, Kin and Bertha 'Broadfoot'; his maternal grandparents were Gerold I Count in the Linzgau, Duke of Allemania Vinzgau and Emma (Imma) of Duchess of Vinzgau Allemania. He had two brothers and a sister, named Charles Holy Roman Emperor, Pippin King of and Bertha Princess of France. He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Aupais.
