William De was born about 1054 in Grentemesnil, Calvados, France.  William De's father was Hugh De Grentmesnil Lord of Hinckle and his mother was Adeliza Or Alice De Beaumont. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Robert De, Hugh De, Ivo (Ives) De, Alberic De, Adeline De, Halewise De, Rohese De, Matilda (Maud) De, Agnes De and Hawise De.  He was the second oldest of the eleven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Robert II De and Alice.
