Margaret was born in 1842 in Shelby,IN. Margaret's father was George Washington Young and her mother was Diademia Rice. Her paternal grandparents were James Young and Mary Guyn; her maternal grandparents were Jacob Rice and Catherine Higbee. She had four brothers and a sister, named James, Charles R, John, William Coates and Catherine. She was the youngest of the six children.-
