His paternal grandparents were John Henry Christopher Theising and Maria Julianna Gertrude Klenke. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John Bernhard, Mathias Augustine, Frank, Matthew, Anna Lissetta, Martha, Maria Elisabeth and Catherine.
