Onita's father was Dean Emberson Stone and her mother was Nola America Proctor.  Her paternal grandparents were George Washington Stone and Elizabeth A. Bowman; her maternal grandparents were General Edward Price Proctor and Sarah Gable. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Roy Edward, Chester Leon, Baby, Mozell, Pansy Louvesta, Stella Mae and Elva.
