Betsy Jane was born on January 1st, 1833. Betsy Jane's father was George Washington Gwin and her mother was Margaret Beck. Her paternal grandfather was James Gwin. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Francis Marion, George Washington, Martha E, Drusilla Angeline, Mary Denzia, Christina Ann, Julia Ann and Laura Ann. She was the second oldest of the nine children.
