His paternal grandparents were Bernard I (Benno) Duke of Saxony and Hildegarde von Stade; his maternal grandparents were Heinrich I, Markgraf von Schweinfurt and Gerberge von Gleiberg. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Hermann Prince of, Hermann, Gertrude of, Ide (Relinde) and Hedwig of. He had a half-sister named Ita von.
