Merfyn Ap was born about 0859 in Caer Seiont,Carnarvonshire,Wales. Merfyn Ap's father was Rhodri "Mawr" ap Merfyn and his mother was Angharad Verch Meurig. His paternal grandparents were Merfyn Frych Ap Gwriad and Nest verch Cadell; his maternal grandfather was Meurig (Meirin) Ap Dyfnwallon. He had two brothers and a sister, named Cadell ap, Anarawd Ap and Nest Verch. He was the second youngest of the four children. He had eight half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Anarawd ap, Merfyn ap, Aeddan ap, Tudwal "Gloff" ap, Meurig ap, Rhodri "Fychan" ap, Gwriad ap, Gwyddelig ap, Nest verch, Angharad verch and Miss verch. Apparently his son, Llwellyn, lost the Kingdom of Powys to his uncle, Cadell.
Llwellyn's daughter, Angharad, married Owain (Owen), son of Hywel the Good,
to settle the claims of Llwellyn to the throne of Powys. Says Mervyn Mawr
died in 916.
