Young: Merfyn Frych (the Freckled) married Nest, heiress of Powys.
History: King of Gwynedd 825. Extended the size of his kingdom. Married Nest,
daughter of Cadell ap Brochwel, King of Powys. Their children were Rhodri and
Gwriad, who was killed with his brother in 878.
K: Mervyn Vrych, King of Manau Guotodin, North Britain. But gives different
wife, Essylt or Isold. History of Morgan Family says she is his mother, not
wife. Will have go get a third opinion on this and other difference.
Merfyn Frych (the Freckled), was the king of Gwynedd, where his court was a
centre of some culture and a meeting place of Irish scholars travelling to the
Continent. On the death, 825, of his mother's uncle, Hywel ap Rhodri Molwynog,
king of Gwynedd (last king in Anglesey of Cunedda's line), Merfyn became king
in Anglesey; later, on the death of Hywel ap Caradoc, he appears to have
acquired kingships of adjacent mainland cantrefs. Thus were united the
inheritances of last direct descendants in Gwynedd of Cunedda. Merfyn married
Nest, daughter of Cadell ap Brochwel of Powys, and died 844, leaving a son,
Rhodri Mawr. [Source 1]
