Eadmund married the widow of Siferth in defiance of his father, KingAethelred
II, who had arrested her (1015).  He took possession of the lands inthe
Danelaw that had belonged to Siferth and Morcar and became a rebelagainst the
King.  He fought against Cnut, joining forces with Uhtred (qv), whowas
treacherously murdered after surrendering to Cnut's superior forces.Eadmund
joined his father in London, where the king died.  Aedmund was thenchosen king
(April 1016), and continued the war with Cnut until October, when hewas
defeated.  By treaty he became lord of Wessex, but he died thefollowing month.
