His paternal grandparents were Robert Phene Palmer and Obedience "Biddy" Hunter; his maternal grandparents were Richard E. Kelley and Nancy Jane Butcher. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Arthur Palmer, Robert P., Bertha Ellen, Annie and Epsie. He was the second youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 68 on September 21st, 1958 in Bloomington, Indiana.-
