James was born in February 1864 in Clear Creek Twp, Monroe, Indiana. James' father was Alexander Conner and his mother was Eliza Jane Pope. His paternal grandparents were John Connor and Mary Sincleer; his maternal grandparents were Simon Pope and Rebecca Prince. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Louis J., Samuel, Tarrence Alonzo Francis, William Alexander, Charles Edgar, Florey A., Catherine Jane, Mary Jeanette 'Nettie', Ida Ellen and Melvina. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children. He had a half-sister named Sarah A.( Nuckles).-
