excommunicated him andannulled this marriage, which was considered incestuous by thechurch; in 1003 Robert submitted to the pope and married thedaughter of the marquis of Provence, Constance of
Arles (died1032), by whom he had four sons. He recognized Hugh (1007-25),the eldest of these sons, as his successor. After Hugh's deathin 1025, the other sons, aided by their mother, revolted;
Robertwas still fighting them at the time of his own death. Robert wascalled The Pious because of his humility and charity; he wasalso esteemed as a soldier and ruler. Merged General Note:Called
