His paternal grandparents were Daniel Watts Javins and Mary (Polly) Basham. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Daniel Samuel, Lloyd Washington, James Thomas, Joshua Franklin, Nancy Ellen, Sarah Margarett and Mary Rozetta.
