Her paternal grandparents were Levi Pennington and Elizabeth Ray. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named John B., William, Benjamin, Joseph M., George Washington, Alfred, James Ervin, Franklin, Mary, Nancy and Cynthia. She was the fourth youngest of the twelve children.-
