Mary was born about 1807 in , Spartanburg, South Carolina.1 Mary's father was Benjamin Pennington and her mother was Catherine Tackett. Her paternal grandparents were Levi Pennington and Elizabeth Ray. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named John B., William, Benjamin, Joseph M., George Washington, Alfred, James Ervin, Franklin, Nancy, Viney and Cynthia. She was the second oldest of the twelve children.-
