His paternal grandparents were David Mattox and Sarah Perkins; his maternal grandparents were Reddin Bryan and Sheba Petty. He had four brothers and four sisters, named David, Redden B., Wiliam J., John Calvin, Evaline, Mahaly, Mary C. and Sarah W.. He was the second oldest of the nine children.-
