Barbara was born in 1634 in Wickham, England. Barbara's father was Robert Brooke and her mother was Mary Baker. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Brooke and Susan Forster; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Baker and Mary Engham. She had two brothers and a sister, named Baker, Thomas and Mary. She was the youngest of the four children. She had eight half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Charles, Roger, Robert, John, William, Francis, Basil, Henry, Mary, Ann and Elizabeth.
