Martha was born in 1817 and her baptism took place on October 12th, 1817 in Lurgashall, Sussex.1   Martha's father was William Steer and her mother was Elizabeth steer.  Her paternal grandparents were James Steer and Elizabeth Rapson. She had two brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Sarah, Harriot, Eliza and Emma.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
