Emma was born in 1824 and her baptism took place on March 7th, 1824 in Lurgashall, Sussex.1   Emma's father was William Steer and her mother was Elizabeth steer.  Her paternal grandparents were James Steer and Elizabeth Rapson. She had two brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Sarah, Martha, Harriot and Eliza.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
