William was born in 1888 in Fittleworth Sussex.1  William's father was George Stear and his mother was Julia.  His paternal grandparents were William Steer and Mary Cobby. He had five brothers and two sisters, named George, Leonard, Gilbert, Riley, Arthur, Nora and Mabel.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
