Leonard was born in 1890 in Fittleworth Sussex.1  Leonard's father was George Stear and his mother was Julia.  His paternal grandparents were William Steer and Mary Cobby. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, George, Gilbert, Riley, Arthur, Nora and Mabel.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
