William was born in 1737 and his baptism took place on May 8th, 1737 in Rudgwick, Sussex.1   William's father was William Steer and his mother was <Unknown>. He had six brothers and six sisters, named John, Lee, William, Edward, John, George, Mary, Ann, Mary, Ann, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the thirteen children.
