Stephen was born in 1842 and his baptism took place on November 27th, 1842 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.1   Stephen's father was James Steer and his mother was Rebecca Miram.  His paternal grandparents were George Steer and Mary Pellett. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Mark, George, James, Eli, Mary, Jane and Ann.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
