Robert was born in 1836 and his baptism took place on January 17th, 1836 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.1 2  Robert's father was Henry Steer and his mother was Ann steer. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Henry, William, John, George, Stephen, James, Thomas and Sarah.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
