George was born in 1834 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.1  George's father was Henry Steer and his mother was Ann steer. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Henry, William, John, Robert, Stephen, James, Thomas and Sarah.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
