John was born in 1798 and his baptism took place on October 6th, 1798 in Angmering, Sussex.1   John's father was Edward Steer and his mother was Sarah Goldsmith. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Edward, George, Anna and Jemima.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
