John was born on March 18th, 1808 in Wisborough Green, Sussex and his baptism took place there on April 17th, 1808.1   John's father was Robert Steer and his mother was Sarah Voice. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named George, Henry, Robert, Thomas, Edward, Stephen, William, Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
