James was born before 1814 and his baptism took place on January 16th, 1814 in Aveton Gifford Devon.1   James' father was George Steere and his mother was Elizabeth Brooking. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry, William, George, John, Sarah and Rhoda.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
