George was born in 1859 in Derby Derbyshire.1  George's father was William Steer and his mother was Julia.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Tom, Walter, Eliza and Hariet.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named William, Agnes, Annie and Nellie.
