Edmund's father was John Steer and his mother was Mary Grills. His paternal grandparents were Edmund Sture and Sarah Grills (of Charleton). He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Philip, Eli, Ebenezer, Mary, Elizabeth and <Unknown>. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
