Catherine's father was Charles Steer and her mother was Ann Mariner.  Her paternal grandparents were William Steer and Elizabeth Howick. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Reuben, Mordecai, Daniel, Charles, Ruth, Martha, Elisabeth and Ann.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
