Ada was born in 1893 in Petworth.¹

Ada's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Caroline. Her paternal grandparents were William Steer and Mary Cobby. She had three brothers and a sister, named James, Jack, William and Fanny. She was the third oldest of the five children.
