Roland was born about 1898 in Mexbro, Yorkshire.1   Roland's father was Charles STEERS and his mother was Jessie STEERS. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James Norman, Charles, Birks, Hilda, Cora, Felican and Ivy.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
