Birks was born about 1895 in Mexbro, Yorkshire.1   Birks' father was Charles STEERS and his mother was Jessie STEERS. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James Norman, Charles, Roland, Hilda, Cora, Felican and Ivy.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
