John was born about 1867 in Thorne, Yorkshire.1   John's father was William STEERS and his mother was Elizabeth STEERS. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Arthur, Alfred, Fred, Walter, Harriet, Elizabeth and Emily.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
