Alfred was born about 1877 in Thorne, Yorkshire.1   Alfred's father was William STEERS and his mother was Elizabeth STEERS. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Arthur, Fred, Walter, Harriet, Elizabeth and Emily.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
