Arthur was born about 1871 in Thorne, Yorkshire.1   Arthur's father was William STEERS and his mother was Elizabeth STEERS. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Alfred, Fred, Walter, Harriet, Elizabeth and Emily.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
