James was born about 1835 in Leek, Staffordshire.1   James' father was Thomas STEERS and his mother was Martha STEERS. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, William Edward, Hannah, Elizabeth, Ann, Ruth and Morton Isabella.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
