William was born in 1720 in Tonbridge, Kent..1   William's father was James STEER and his mother was Elizabeth. He had seven brothers and a sister, named James, Thomas, John, Henry, Humphrey, Joseph, Barnett and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
