Muriel was born about 1894 in Icklesham, Sussex.1   Muriel's father was James Alfred STEER and her mother was Elizabeth Jane STEER. She had two brothers and three sisters, named James Alfred, Charles, Ruth, Blanche Julia and Annie.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
