Matilda was born about 1888 in Ecclesfield Yorkshire.1   Matilda's father was Thomas STEER and her mother was Emma STEER. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Albert Edwd, Thomas, Joel, Geo Fredk, Cecil, Eleanor and Gertrude.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
